Overview

Four days is a short break rather than a tour of Jordan, and this itinerary treats it that way. You stay in Amman throughout and take two full-day excursions out from it — north to Jerash and down to the Dead Sea on one, south to Petra on the other. Nothing is packed and repacked, and the hotel knows you by the second morning.

Jerash is the northern day and the one most people underestimate. It is a Roman provincial city that was never built over, so the oval forum ringed by columns, the cardo with chariot ruts worn into its paving, the Nymphaeum fountain and the Temple of Artemis all stand where they were left rather than reconstructed from fragments. A local guide walks you through it for an hour or so. The road afterwards drops steadily west and south to the Dead Sea, four hundred metres below sea level, where the salt concentration is high enough that staying upright takes more effort than floating, and the mineral mud along the shoreline is why the resorts were built there at all.

Petra is the southern day and it takes all of it. You ride a horse the first stretch from the visitor centre, then walk into the Siq — a fissure through the sandstone over a kilometre long, with walls running up eighty metres and narrowing in places until the sky is a line overhead — until the Treasury opens at the far end. Beyond it the Nabataean city keeps going for several kilometres: the Street of Facades, the theatre cut straight into the rock, and the Royal Tombs ranged along the eastern cliff. Your guide covers two to three hours, and the rest of the day is yours to keep walking before the drive back north.

Everything runs privately, with an English-speaking assistant travelling with you throughout and specialist local guides at Petra and Jerash.

Send us your travel dates and group size and we'll come back with availability and a per-person price.

Daily Itinerary

Your tour manager meets you at Queen Alia International Airport, helps with the entry formalities and drives you into the city, about forty minutes by private air-conditioned vehicle. They see you through check-in, go through the days ahead with you and agree the morning pickup rather than assigning it. A welcome drink is waiting at the hotel. The rest of the evening is free.

Overnight: Amman
Included visits: None
Meals: Welcome drink
Optional experiences: An evening walk through downtown Amman, the Citadel hill and the Roman theatre
Important notes: Airport pickup is included whatever time you arrive. Confirm your visa arrangements with us before travel — the Jordan Pass, bought online in advance, waives the visa fee for most visitors and covers Petra and Jerash entry.

After breakfast you drive north to Jerash, about an hour, where a local guide takes you through the site: the oval forum, the colonnaded cardo, the Nymphaeum and the Temple of Artemis on the terrace above. The afternoon runs south and west, dropping several hundred metres to the Dead Sea, where you have time at a resort beach to float and use the mineral mud. You return to Amman in the evening.

Overnight: Amman
Included visits: Jerash, Dead Sea
Meals: Breakfast
Optional experiences: Spa treatments at the Dead Sea resort
Important notes: Bring a swimsuit and flip-flops — the shoreline is sharp underfoot. Do not shave that morning, keep the water out of your eyes, and twenty minutes in the water is plenty. Lunch is not included.

An early start for the drive south, roughly two and a half hours each way on the Desert Highway. It is about seven hundred metres on horseback and on foot from the visitor centre to the mouth of the Siq, then a little over a kilometre through the gorge itself before the Treasury comes into view. Your local guide covers the main sites over two to three hours — the Street of Facades, the theatre, the Royal Tombs — after which the site stays open to you. You walk back out through the Siq and drive north to Amman for the night.

Overnight: Amman
Included visits: Petra
Meals: Breakfast
Optional experiences: The climb to the Monastery, around 800 rock-cut steps; the Al Khubtha trail to the viewpoint above the Treasury; golf-cart assistance along the approach
Important notes: The longest day of the trip — around five hours in the vehicle plus a full day on your feet, with the return walk uphill. Proper shoes, a hat and more water than you expect to need. Lunch is not included; there are restaurants inside the site. Horse numbers are limited and the ride covers only the approach, not the Siq or the city.

Breakfast at the hotel, then a transfer to Queen Alia International Airport timed around your flight, with margin for the drive and the airport queues. If you fly in the evening, reception will hold your luggage and a half-day of Amman sightseeing can be arranged in advance.

Included visits: None
Meals: Breakfast
Important notes: Allow three hours before an international departure. Ask us about a late checkout or a day-use room if your departure is late in the day.
